Which stabilizer to use for machine embroidery: a practical fabric guide

Puckered fabric, misaligned outlines and sunken stitches almost always share one cause: the wrong stabilizer. In this guide you'll learn which stabilizer to use for each fabric so your embroidery comes out right the first time.
What does a stabilizer do? A stabilizer holds the fabric steady while the needle pierces it thousands of times. Without it, fabric stretches, wrinkles and the design distorts.
1. Tear-away stabilizer Best for stable woven fabrics: quilting cotton, linen, twill and light denim. After stitching, just tear off the excess. Use one or two thin layers rather than one heavy layer.
2. Cut-away stabilizer Essential for knits and stretchy fabrics: T-shirts, polos, sweatshirts and baby bodysuits. It stays behind the design permanently and keeps it stable through many washes. Trim leaving about 1 cm around the design.
3. Water-soluble stabilizer Dissolves in water. Use it as a topping on towels, velvet and plush so stitches don't sink into the pile, or as a base for free-standing lace (FSL) and sheer fabrics like organza and tulle.
4. Fusible or adhesive stabilizer Great for small, hard-to-hoop areas such as collars, cuffs, caps and pockets. Adhesive stabilizer lets you "float" fabric without hoop marks on delicate pieces.
Quick fabric guide - Quilting cotton: medium tear-away. - T-shirts and knits: cut-away + light fusible. - Sweatshirts: medium cut-away. - Denim and twill: firm tear-away or cut-away. - Towels: tear-away or cut-away below + water-soluble topping. - Silk, satin and tulle: water-soluble or very light cut-away. - Caps: firm cap tear-away.
Golden tip Hoop fabric and stabilizer together, taut but without distorting the weave. Always test on a scrap before the final piece, especially with new fabrics.
Right stabilizer + well-digitized design The stabilizer does half the job; the design does the other half. Embing designs are digitized with pull compensation to stitch perfectly on the first run, in DST, PES, JEF and EXP.
